Bing luring Internet searchers: comScore

Microsofts new Internet search engine Bing boosted the software giants share of the US market in the week following its release, industry tracking firm comScore reported Tuesday. Microsofts share of search results pages in the United States rose two percent to 11.1 percent the week after being rolled out, according to comScore. It appears to be off to a good start, said comScore vice president Mike Hurt. The ultimate performance of Bing depends on the extent to which it generates more trial through its extensive launch campaign and whether it retains those trial users. Microsoft gave Bing a public debut on May 28 and said it would be deployed worldwide by June 1. The US software colossus described Bing as a Decision Engine aimed at helping people make buying decisions, plan trips, research health matters or find local businesses. Bings launch came in the wake of Google and Yahoo! announcing refinements to their search services and the launch of a Wolfram Alpha query engine that delivers answers instead of lists of websites

Firefox 3.5 RC 1 as Close to Release as Possible

The first Release Candidate for Firefox 3.5, formerly version 3.1, is as close to availability as possible, reveals Mozilla. The next iteration of the open source browser is on the verge of evolving from Beta to RC. However, although downloads are just around the corner, Firefox 3.5 is not live yet. The best that users can hope for, at least for the time being, is to grab a pre-RC nightly build. And while Mozilla is gearing up to take Firefox 3.5 RC out of the baking oven, it is also cooking another test day for the browser. Im here to inform that were going to be holding another Fx3.5 RC1 Testday event on Friday, June 5th, from 7AM - 5PM PDT! Itll be a concentrated mozQA Community day committed to testing Firefox 3.5 RC 1. This time around we should have the real builds out this Friday, revealed Aakash Desai, QA Engineer at Mozilla Corporation. MozQA is holding a Testday for the rollout of Firefox 3.5 RC 1 which is as close to a release as possible! I dont need to remind everyone of how important this phase is, so were going to need your awesome testing skills to make sure its as polished as possible.” It now appears that users will be getting Firefox 3.5 RC1 ahead of Firefox 3.0.11. Mozilla identified a regression issue with the latest security and stability update for Firefox 3.0, and postponed the release to a date yet to be announced. By contract, on June 3, 2009, there were only two blockers left for Firefox 3.5 RC1. Blockers are generally referred to as show stopping issues, bugs severe enough to prevent the browser from advancing to the next stage in its development process. Mozilla estimated a couple of days ago that it would have resolved all Firefox 3.5 RC1 bugs by today, June 5. At the same time, Mozilla indicated that anticipation for RC1 was great, with over 800,000 users running the Beta 4 development milestone of Firefox 3.5. Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 and

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Scanner

Its been a while since we ve taken a good look at Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. After the version firstly reviewed by us the application has grown some new features and consolidated its signature database to pull out the latest types of malware from your system. As usual, its purpose is to root out nasties that are generally overlooked by the protection suite habitually residing on your system. So it should be used as a second layer of backup for the computer. The application has not changed too much since our analysis of version 0.68 of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. In fact, as far as the interface is concerned, a new tab has been added to give you access to the scan logs and see exactly the infected areas (memory processes, memory modules, registry keys/values/data, folders), the number of objects checked and the amount of malware detected. Everything is reported clearly in a simple text document any user can read. Besides the freeware version were going to test, there is also a paid version of the product, which comes packed with more functionality. The $24.95 full version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware offers real-time protection against nasties and boasts scheduling options for system scans. Other than this there is absolutely no difference between the two. Installation of the program is done in a jiffy and there is absolutely nothing peculiar about it, so were not going to hang around this at all. Once launched, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware presents a simple-looking interface that does nothing but plainness to stand out with. All its options are aligned in eight easy-to-follow tabs. Simplicity and comfort in use are the words to characterize the interface by. Under the Scanner section the app features two types of scans you can appeal to in case of suspicion: a quick one, which checks the system for the most common types of malware, and a full scan, which is designed to run a thorough verification of every drive specified by you (removable ones are accepted, as well as network locations). The Protection area is reserved for the full version of the software. Its purpose is to protect you and your system from intrusions by blocking them before they can do significant damage. In other words, this is the real-time protection center. If you want to check for new updates and load the latest signatures, Update is where you should be. Here you can view info on the database currently protecting you, the release date of the last update, or the amount of fingerprints loaded and ready to protect you against malware. Each nasty, once caught, gets to be sent to quarantine, an isolated place from where it cant do any harm to your system. If the program erroneously picks up a perfectly healthy file, the Quarantine tab is where you can yank it back from among the nasties and restore it to its original place. You can restore them one by one or all of them at once. The same goes for deletion, only in this case the process is not reversible. As for statistics, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware shows the number of elements enclosed in the isolated chamber.

Windows 7 Forked, Builds 7200 and 7225 with Service Pack 1

Microsoft has reportedly passed the 7200 build string milestone in the development of Windows 7. At the same time, reports indicate that the Redmond-based company is also building and testing the first Service Pack for the next iteration of the Windows client and server operating systems, even though both Windows 7 client and Windows Server 2008 R2 are yet to hit the RTM mark, let alone general availability. Wzor has leaked screenshots of Windows 7 Build 7138 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Build 7138 with Service Pack 1 already installed, and now the peek behind the Win7 scene coming from the Russian website is Windows 7 Build 7200. According to Wzor, Windows 7 builds in the main branch, winmain, have jumped from 6.1.7141.0.winmain.090528, compiled on May 28, all the way to 6.1.7225.0.winmain.090529, wrapped up on May 29, in just a single day. Microsoft apparently passed a very important milestone in the development process of Windows 7 on May 29, but there are no details available as to what exactly happened. Still, the Redmond-based company is set to unveil all changes by the end of June 2009. Nonetheless, it appears that the Windows 7 development process now has two directions, and two main branches. Such a move implies that Windows 7 has gone through a forking, a strategy designed to split the build tree in order to accommodate builds from two branches. Microsoft did that in the past with Windows 7 RC and RTM, and it is now doing it again with RTM and SP1. In this context, the main branches of Windows 7, after the fork, are winmain and winmain_sp. In order to support half of the forked tree, Microsoft is also producing builds in the winmain_win7ids branch. The latest builds of Windows 7, from all branches, are 6.1.7200.0.winmain_win7ids_sp.090529; 6.1.7225.0.winmain_sp.090529 and 6.1.7225.0.winmain.090529. No official comment from Microsoft as of yet.

Virtual Earth Gets Rebranded as Bing Maps for Enterprise

Microsoft is not only in the process of releasing a new search engine, but also of launching a new consumer brand: Bing. Because it is envisioned as the Redmond companys next-generation search engine, a service that will kill Live Search, Bing will also affect existing components associated with Microsoft search, including the software giants mapping and location platform. This means that both Live Search Maps and Virtual Earth have been rebranded to come under the Bing umbrella. For Live Search Maps the deal is simple, and the rebranding obvious, especially since Bing will replace Live Search. Live Search Maps was our consumer maps offering. This is the web site you go to for maps, aerial photos, directions, searching for points of interest and creating collections of your own personal data to store in the cloud. Live Search Maps is now called Bing Maps revealed Chris Pendleton, future Bing Maps technical evangelist, still Virtual Earth tech evangelist for the time being. When it comes down to Virtual Earth, the new brand is not that consumer-friendly anymore. Essentially Microsoft has always regarded Virtual Earth as an enterprise mapping platform. And the rebranding is now designed to reflect that this is indeed an offering aimed at enterprise customers. With the advent of Bing, Microsoft Virtual Earth will become Bing Maps for Enterprise. The strategy will undoubtedly focus consumers on Bing Maps rather than Bing Maps for Enterprise. MapPoint Web Service will remain MapPoint Web Service. Photosynth will remain Photosynth. Well, this is a lot of work to go through each one, so I took the liberty of interviewing one of our Corporate Vice Presidents in Search, Erik Jorgensen, to discuss this hot topic, Pendleton added. Microsoft started rolling out Bing on May 28, 2009, and is preparing to give the public access on June 3rd

Free Vista to Windows 7 Upgrades Program Debuts June 26th

With the Release Candidate Build 7100 development milestone available for download since May 5th, 2009, and Windows 7 making its way toward RTM, Microsoft is also planning to debut the Tech Guarantee Program, now labeled Microsoft’s ‘Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program’ associated with the operating system. The Redmond company offered a similar program for Windows Vista, and it is now planning to do the same for Windows 7, starting June 26th, 2009. The marketing initiative is designed to offer free upgrades from Windows Vista to Windows 7 for customers who will not wait for the next iteration of the Windows client. Microsoft has failed to offer any details related to its Technical Guarantee Program for Windows 7, but APC revealed that the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program was planned for debut by the end of next month. PC manufacturer Acer has already begun promoting the initiative in Australia, by offering marketing materials advertising the debut of the program. “Beginning June 26, 2009, customers who purchase a qualifying ACER Vista-based PC will receive a comparable version of Windows 7 when available,” reads the message of a slip included with new purchased Acer computers. The Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program is designed to compensate eventual consumer trends to hold out from buying new computers and wait for the general availability of Windows 7 instead. The Redmond company, in partnership with OEMs, is working to convince users to buy new machines preloaded with Windows Vista and get a free upgrade to Windows 7 when the operating system will become available. The only eligible Vista editions for the Upgrade Option Program are Home Premium, Business, and Vista Ultimate. The move will be made between equivalent SKUs, for example Vista Ultimate users will receive an upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate. Windows XP is also included in the program, but only for Vista downgrades, essentially only if a Vista license is present

Installing Windows 7 Build 7137 - 35 Screenshot Gallery

Microsoft is making headway with the development of Windows 7. The next iteration of the Windows client is now evolving from Release Candidate to RTM and is as close to finalization as possible, with the Redmond company in the phase in which it is refining and fine-tuning the operating system in order to prepare it for General Availability. Microsoft has yet to announce the official deadlines for the release to manufacturing of Windows 7, or for GA. However, the company was confident enough to point out that Windows 7 would hit store shelves in retail outlets and both pre-installed on new OEM computers by the 2009 holiday season. For Windows 7 RC testers, Build 7100 will not be that different from the RTM Build. When installing Windows 7 Build 7137, a pre-RTM development milestone, users already familiar with earlier releases of the platform and especially with RC will not notice anything different. The End User License Agreement still refers to Build 7137 as Release Candidate and the build is labeled Win7_RC.1_Ult_NRL+en-US. After the installation is complete, the Betta fish wallpaper will still welcome users to the first startup. The screenshots included at the bottom of this article will provide an insight into the main steps of the deployment of Windows 7 Build 7137. At the start of May Windows 7 Build 7100 became available for download to the public. The development milestone represents the first and only Release Candidate of Windows 7 that Microsoft will produce. Essentially, the RC means that the platform is finalized. The Redmond company will no longer add features or make drastic changes that would impact the architecture of the OS. However, modifications will continue in the line of softening all the rough corners of Windows 7 for the final release. Changes related to security, performance and compatibility will find their way into the operating system

Google's Story Pages Upgraded

Google News, the news aggregator provided by the search giant, just got bumped up a notch with a new interface for the story pages, which you can see when you click the all news articles" link of each cluster of items associated with a single event. Now this section will practically be a group of different websites, blogs, videos and photos. These pages are composed of various pieces of information about a specific subject gathered from different sources and indexed in Google News. Depending on the most recent coverage and materials available for a given story, the page features top articles, quotes from the people in the story, and posts from news blogs. You will also find image thumbnails, videos, articles from sources based near the story, and a timeline of articles to trace media coverage of the story, explained David Ganzhorn and Corrie Scalisi, software engineers. The links will lead directly to the source site and the videos will be able to be played on the given page. Essentially, what the Mountain View company has focused on is offering end users a plethora of different perspectives focused on news stories. In this regard, Google also manages to highlight additional sources for current events. The improvement is intended to give the user access to all of the sides to the story, enabling him to be well informed. The fact that it groups up videos and links to consecrated sources but also to blogs that also have personal opinions can only help. It is said that knowledge is power, and what better way to get it but by gathering information from various sources and analyzing it. But of course, the search giant is not stopping here. Google News will continue to evolve and grow, tailoring the content to end users.

How to Build Incoming Links to Your Website

Incoming links are important. Google will analyze all your incoming links as part of the process in assigning a page rank to your website. If you do a quick analysis using Googles page rank checker and prediction tools, you will notice that it will show how many incoming links are pointing to your website. Usually a site with PR6 has more than 10,000 links pointing back to their site while a PR7 has over 20,000 links. Apple.com on the other hand is a site with PR10 and they have over 1,300,000 links pointing to their site! Its pretty rare to find a website with such a high page rank. There are many techniques to get other websites to link to yours. One of the most renowned techniques is of course exchanging links. Its pretty common to find site owners dropping messages on your website asking for a link exchange. Before you agree to link their websites, be sure to check whether they have a good page rank or not. Usually websites with a page rank linking to yours will help you obtain a better page rank in the future. However, this process is slow and takes heaps of time. Imagine this - asking each and every website that you encounter to request for a link exchange. It will take the web owner a day to reply and another day to provide a link back to your website. Ive done this myself and the overall results were not that impressive. If you have an interesting website with great content, Im sure that there would be many people linking back their site to yours. Once again, to build a site with good contents takes time and this will be a long process. Of course, if you do have the resources, you can always pay someone to link back to your website. This on the other hand might cost you a lot of money! Contrary, Ive seen some sites offering to sell a link for just $1 a year. But if you expect a site with a high page rank to link back to yours, it might cost you from as little as $5 to over $5000 a month. Paid-to-blog sites such as Blogitive, PayPerPost, Blogsvertise, BlogBurst and ReviewMe has similar concept. Bloggers get paid to blog about the advertisers and they are required to provide a back link to the advertisers site.
